Madrid...ole!

We took a night train from Paris, and woke up in Madrid about 8 hours later. What a complete culture change! The weather was absolutely perfect for trudging more backstreets and plenty of sightseeing.

We spent most our time in the huge, beautiful parks and the art museums. We also made it over to the royal palace. and the royal armory, and the royal pharmacy...It was pretty cool. We also managed a few Spanish meals which were quite tasty, and began our search for flan (we thought it was a Spanish dessert, but it actually dates back to ancient Rome...oops!) and paella (lots of that available) and tapas (we had no idea what they were-and still don't, but searched for them anyway).

Ironically, we hit Madrid right before they had their first annual cultural celebration called La Noche en Blanca (the night in white). It was basically this huge party across the city that started at 9pm and when till 7am. It was total madness! Looking back, we should've just joined in on the fun instead of attempting to sleep (our hostel was smack dab in the middle of a plaza that was prime party territory). I don't think we got much sleep that night. It was pretty funny tho, cuz we woke up early the next morning to catch a 6:30am train, and we found ourselves walking with all the drunk partyers finally calling it quits for the night. (very entertaining)

All in all, Madrid was a great city. It was a lot more laid back of an experience for us and it was great to just kick it in the parks and take naps, and just get lost in the city and all its beauty. Ahh...Spain....
Okay, so this is the train station! How cool of a building is this?!?! (I liked it anyway)Here is Jared in front of El Templo de Debod. This was a really old Egyptian-style building (2000+ years old) that was sent here as a gift...pretty cool
Here is one of the cool parks that we spent hours at. Jared loved to climb/jump down/climb again this particular stair-like hill.
Yet another park. These trees were freakin' awesome! Can anyone find Jared???This is the Reina Sofia. It was located right next to our hostel and was the site for much festivities during La Noche en Blanca. It's an art museum that is full of modern art. This is where Guernica (by Picasso) is located. They had 100's of Picasso's sketches when he was doing this work. It is probably one of my favorite paintings that I've ever seen. It's practically worth the trip to Spain just to see this!!! Look it up, it's way cool!
Here I am posing with Valesquez in from of the Prado, probably one of the most famous museums in Spain. There was tons of neat Spanish art here.
This is the royal palace. It was huge! We actually paid for a tour of some of the rooms inside, and talk about intricate. It was absolutely beautiful.
Jared pretending to be a guard for the palace. Ooooohh, I'm sooooo intimitated! :)
Me posing in front of some of the palace gardens. I love the different shapes of the bushes and trees, it's so neat.
This is an "illegal" picture from inside the royal armoury. Look at how small the armour is! (such tiny people!) We were trying to be really sneaky and take some pictures, but I forgot to turn off the flash and we almost got kicked out by a security guard. From that point on, Jared was in charge of all illegal pictures for the rest of the trip.
This is a really cool church, that just looks really "Spanish" to me. I love the architecture.Okay, so I LOVE this picture. We were on a bridge and Jared was trying to be sneaky and kiss me and take a picture at the same time w/out me knowing. And this is what we got. I don't know why, but I just really like it. (PS-it was taken in Madrid, hence why I posted it here)

My only comment is to quote from Princess Bride, "Is this a kissing book?"
